Full-Grain vs Top-Grain vs Genuine Leather — What Is the Difference?

Not all real leather is the same. The words on the label tell you which part of the hide was used — and how long the item will last.

Full-grain leather — the best Full-grain is the top layer of the hide with the natural grain left on. Nothing is sanded away, so it is the strongest and most breathable leather. It shows small natural marks and develops a rich patina over the years. It is the most expensive, and the best investment.

Top-grain leather — very good Top-grain is the same top layer, but lightly sanded and finished to remove marks. It is smoother and more even in colour, a little less strong than full-grain, and still very durable. Many luxury handbags use it.

"Genuine leather" — the basic grade Confusingly, "genuine leather" is often the lowest grade: the lower layers of the hide, pressed and coated. It is real leather, but it does not last as long.

Suede and nubuck Suede is the soft inner side of the hide, brushed to a velvet feel. Nubuck is full-grain leather lightly brushed on the outside — softer than smooth leather and stronger than suede.

Which should you choose? For a jacket, belt or wallet you will use every day, choose full-grain. For a dressy bag where a perfect finish matters, top-grain is excellent. Every product page at Rovanhide tells you exactly which leather is used.
