A leather jacket is one of the few things in your wardrobe that gets better with time. A little care is all it needs.
- Hang it on a wide, padded hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.
- Never store it in plastic — leather needs to breathe. Use a cotton garment bag.
- Keep it away from radiators, heaters and direct sun, which dry the leather and fade the colour.
- Wipe off dust and marks with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Condition the leather every 3 to 6 months with a good leather conditioner.
- Caught in the rain? Let it dry naturally at room temperature — never with a hair dryer.
- Do not put it in the washing machine or a normal dry cleaner. Use a leather specialist only.
- Empty the pockets before storing; heavy items stretch the leather.
- Test any new product on a hidden spot (inside the hem) first.
- Wear it! Leather stays supple when it moves with your body.
Removing small stains For water spots, dab the whole panel lightly with a damp cloth so it dries evenly. For oil or grease, sprinkle a little cornflour or talc, leave it overnight and brush it off. Ink is tricky — ask a leather specialist rather than rubbing it.
Follow these steps and your jacket will develop a beautiful patina — the soft shine and character that only real leather gets.
